      <image:caption>Dries is responsible for managing academic research projects within the group. He obtained his PhD in Bioscience Engineering at KU Leuven Kulak in 2013. Dries obtained two successive FWO postdoctoral fellowships focusing on the processing of microalgae biomass as novel source for biofuels. He was visiting scientist in 2015 at the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL, CO USA) and at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney, Australia) from 2016 till 2017. In 2018, Dries was appointed as assistant Professor at UHasselt as a one of the PIs within our research group.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Willem was born and raised in the rustic village of Heusden-Zolder. In June 2018, he finished his master’s degree in Environmental and nuclear engineering at Hasselt University. From October 2018, he joined our research group of Analytical and Circular Chemistry. His research initially focused on the optimization of the production technology for novel green fertilizers. Hereafter, from November 2019 onwards, he started investigating the potential of biomass waste derived activated carbons to be able to store electrochemical energy in the form of supercapacitor devices. In his free time, Willem likes to read, jog, cycle and go out with his friends and family.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Michaela Pappa - About Michaela</image:title>
      <image:caption>Michaela completed her cycle of studies at the Agricultural University of Athens receiving her Master's degree in Food Science and Human nutrition with her master's thesis exploring yeast growth on by-products of the biodiesel industry in the Food Biotechnology Laboratory. She had the opportunity to study one semester abroad at the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague and conduct an internship in the RnD department of a Belgian bottling company. In ‘real life’, she likes playing basketball, drinking coffee before going to the lab, tasting new food, going for snorkeling during summer and dancing all year round. Her goals are to finally get used to driving a car, get a scuba-diving and a sailing licence, and run 5 km under 30 min. One of her favourite quotes is “ἕν οἶδα ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα” (“I know that I know nothing”) from Socrates.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Sanjaya graduated with a Master of Science by Research in Biotechnology at Katmandu University in Nepal. He conducted his master thesis work on the flocculation of several microalgal species from the Aquatic Biology Lab at KU Leuven Kulak. To continue his passion for exploring the infinite potential of tiny green algal cells, he joined the ACC group as a Ph.D. student in October 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dries Vandamme. His work is focused on optimizing the coagulation-sedimentation-based dewatering of microalgal cells. Outside of the lab walls, he says he prefers to do “nothing”- the complete ceasing of mind and corporeal actions! Probably the most challenging feat in this 21st-century technocratic metaverse.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Amine was born in Casablanca, the financial metropole of Morocco. After completing a master's in chemical engineering at Hasselt University, he joined Analytical and circular chemistry in March 2019. He currently works as a Ph.D student within the BASTA project under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ir. Dries Vandamme. After working hours you can find Amine in the gym, playing football or just enjoying free time. He also mastered the art of drinking tea and infusions, which makes him very calm on a daily basis.</image:caption>

After specializing in polymer chemistry, he was eager to broaden his experience at the ACC research group, where his passion for instrumental analytical techniques is combined with the societal relevance of striving to ‘greenify’ chemistry. When not in the lab, Dries writes a website about fountain pens (yes, those still exist!) and all things related to the not-quite-forgotten art of writing with pen and paper!
